The part I really struggled with was (particularly with one kid) a lot of them said they worked really hard to get where they were. They try really hard to push the word that they aren’t “privileged kids” that they have these hard life backgrounds. Hollywood is really struggling with an inequality crisis. How can we expect to tell diverse stories or hire diverse professionals, if even the most pedigreed among them are passed over for an inexperienced family member for “political reasons.”Īnd it’s not just about race or sexuality - how many movies are about regular everyday people? How many glorify extreme wealth and aristocracy? How can we expect to tell the average person’s story if they don’t hire them?
Whether you wanna be an actor, filmmaker, or even tech person - you are going to do A LOT better if you have a relative or close contact already working in the business. They “had to go with someone else for political reasons. We were expecting a call about it for a few weeks and just yesterday they finally heard back. Well the show did well and got picked up for season 2. We thought it would really be the start of the next phase of their career. When COVID hit they got into tv and moved up quickly into the art department. They are a costume designer, wig designer, lighting designer - WITH a portfolio and exp to back it up. They also helped me launch our small production studio, and they operate as our creative manager. They have managed 10 different theaters here in LA, produced upwards of 6 international theater productions annually, and handled ALL of the technical design for all of this.
